Learner Permit

Before you may drive you must be in possession of a Learner Permit (formerly Provisional Licence).

When you have passed your theory test, you will need to complete an Application Form, have an Eyesight Report completed by a Doctor or Optician, 2 passport photos, a copy (not photo copy) of your Birth Certificate and your theory test result. You should submit these in person (any other person may do this for you) or by post to your local licensing Authority and your Learner Permit will be posted back to you. You must not drive until you receive your actual Learner Permit.
Application forms are available from any Garda Station or Motor Tax Offices.


From July 1 2008 holders of Learner Permits (Provisional Driving Licences)
are required by law to be accompanied at all times by the holder of a Full Driving Licence  for the vehicle class they are are driving.
The accompanying person must hold the Full Driving Licence for a minimum of 2 years
Holders of Learner Permits (Provisional Driving Licences)
must dsplay an "L" plate, front and rear.
Failure to comply with either the above can result in fines of up to €1000

 

Remenber you are required by law, since January 1 2003 to carry your Driving Licence (Learner Permit or Full) with you
at all times when you are driving in a public place.
